Plant Based Collagen – Sea Moss

Hi Everyone!

Today I wanted to talk about something new I’ve discovered that is not only good for skin, but also body and health. Sea moss, also known as Irish Moss or carrageen, has been one of the most natural and interesting superfoods I have recently encountered. It is a type of red algae that has been known to help boost your skin and immune health. Fun fact: Sea moss was first discovered to treat respiratory problems in 1830 in Ireland. This was a very important nutritional source still available for many people, especially during the Great Hunger (1846-1851). [Fact from https://www.irishcentral.com/]

This type of algae grows throughout the mountain side of the Atlantic coast of the British Isles, including certain parts of Europe and other parts of North America. Most people boil the raw sea moss before consuming, making the sea moss a gel like texture. You can find sea moss powdered or in a pill form, but personally I believe the gel is the most natural and ideal way to ingest sea moss.

When consuming, I take a spoonful of the gel textured sea moss from the jar first thing in the morning. It is better if you eat it before ingesting anything else. I’ll be honest, it doesn’t taste so great and the texture definitely doesn’t make it any better. Many people like to mix it in tea or smoothies, which is the best option if you can’t handle it by itself. I have tried putting sea moss in my green tea with a good amount of honey, but the taste was worse in my opinion. So gulping down a spoonful of sea moss while shooting it down with water works best for me. Sea moss is packed with essential minerals, one of them being folate, which helps with prenatal health and development. Iodine is another key mineral in sea moss, which helps the thyroid run properly and create thyroid hormones. Sea moss is also high in nutrients like iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc. All of those nutrients are known to boost immune health, which can help fight off cold and flu symptoms. This is very important during these COVID-19 times we are living in.

When I apply sea moss topically, I get a small amount from the jar and apply a thin layer on my face and neck. Once a week I will apply it to my body and wash it off in the shower. It feels so nice and cool when applying to my skin. (Remember that sea moss is alive and well, so keep refrigerated at all times) I let the sea moss sit for about 20-30 minutes. When it dries, it hardens and makes your skin feel very tight. I wash it off with warm water and apply moisturizer to finish my routine. I use it daily, either morning or night. In order for you to see results, you must be consistent. The first few days I started to use it, I noticed I began to break out more than usual. I was confused, and a little upset. So I contacted the seller, and she told me that it is cleansing my skin and that I should see results in 2 weeks but I must use it everyday. Which makes sense, because any skin care product is known to take a while to show results. I have only been using sea moss for about 2 weeks, so I am still very new to this. I just started to use it daily a few days ago, so I am excited to see how it will look 2-3 weeks from now. (Will post an update so stay tuned!)

Applying sea moss topically is known to help with acne and aging skin, because it offers anti-inflammatory properties. It is rich in sulfur, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin K, and omega-3 fatty acids, which all help in promoting healthy skin cell function and hydration. Every time I use sea moss, my skin feels like it is glowing and my pores feel tight. I hope once I start to see results, my pores will show signs of shrinkage.

There are many pros about sea moss, but please keep in mind that sea moss is still being tested for concrete evidence. That means it may not work for everybody, which is a given with any kind of skin care or health products. Depending how my skin will react in 2-3 weeks, I still don’t know if it is for me as well. I’m just going to wait and see how it goes, will keep you updated!

I purchased my sea moss from HealthSea Decisions. You can check out their instagram here. They also have an online store which you can have your jars delivered! But if you don’t mind a drive to the valley, they have pick up options.

Thank you for reading! I hope you will have fun trying out this new food for skin superfood I discovered.

Keep on blooming.
